Bishop Joseph M. Gilmore : First Native Bishop of Helena
Description:
Seminarians at Legendary Lodge on Salmon Lake in Western Montana in 1955. Bishop Gilmore acquired the lodge, which was built by William A. Clark, Jr., during the 1950s. He used the lodge as his own summer residence, as well as a place for clergy, Cathedral choristers, and the children from St. Joseph's Home to relax. Bishop Gilmore envisioned it as a summer camp for youth in grades 5 through 12, which it continues to be in the 21st century.
