Bishop Joseph M. Gilmore : First Native Bishop of Helena
On his day of consecration as bishop, 19 February 1936. Bishop Gilmore stands with his parents, John and Mary Hanrahan Gilmore. Bishop Gilmore was born 22 March 1893 in New York City. His parents were married in St. John's Church in New York in 1887, after having come to America from County Galway, Ireland. In 1898, Bishop Gilmore's father moved the family, himself, his wife, and their five sons, to Anaconda, Montana, where he worked at a smelter. After arriving in Anaconda, they settled in at St. Peter's Parish, where a very young Joseph Michael Gilmore attended school.
