Bishop Joseph M. Gilmore : First Native Bishop of Helena
Bishop Gilmore died in San Francisco on 2 April 1962, where he was attending the installation of Archbishop McGucken. On 11 April 1962, the funeral of Bishop Gilmore was held at Resurrection Cemetery in Helena, Montana. Archbishop Howard of Portland celebrated the Pontifical Requiem Mass and Bishop Condon of Great Falls preached the eulogy. For 26 years (1935—1962), Bishop Gilmore led the Diocese of Helena and the people living within the diocese experienced growth in their schools, churches, missions, organizations, and hospitals. But most importantly, the community grew spiritually through Bishop Gilmore's guidance.
