Bishop Joseph M. Gilmore : First Native Bishop of Helena
Celebrations were also important aspects of Bishop Gilmore's ministry. St. Mary's Mission in Stevensville celebrated its 100th anniversary as the first Catholic Church in Montana in August 1941, a hundred years after Fr. DeSmet established it among the Flathead Indians. For the celebration Fr. Mathias Weber directed the St. Helena Cathedral Choristers. Over thirty prelates from all over the nation, various lay people, provincials of religious orders, monsignors, and religious and diocesan clergy were present. The celebration provided inspiration to the people and recognized the momentous achievement for the Catholic Church in Montana.
