Bishop Joseph M. Gilmore : First Native Bishop of Helena
Bishop Joseph Michael Gilmore was consecrated Bishop of the Diocese of Helena, Montana on 19 February 1936. He was the first diocesan priest to become the Bishop of the Diocese of Helena. This picture was used on the cover of a booklet made for his 25th aniversary as Bishop of Helena. Bishop Gilmore was responsible for ordaining at least 63 priests, as well as consecrating 3 bishops. He was involved in building and/or renovating at least 20 new churches, 12 rectories, 9 convents, 3 high schools, and various college and hospital additions. Bishop Gilmore helped lead the Diocese of Helena through some troubling times, including the Great Depression, World War II, and the beginnings of the Cold War.
