The Cathedral of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, 1866—1925 : The "Old" Cathedral
Sketch of the first Catholic church in Last Chance Gulch [Helena, Montana Territory] on Catholic Hill drawn by Gen. Curtis. Actually the sketch by General Curtis of the log cabin home [of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Leath's] with a cross attached to it was a sign that Father Giorda, SJ had ridden in on horseback and would say Mass for the miners. It was October 1865. Over the next few months missionary priests said Mass in various homes in Last Chance Gulch.
