The Cathedral of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, 1866—1925 : The "Old" Cathedral

This exhibit of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary church, later the first Cathedral in Montana Territory; represents a vibrant Catholic presence in the mining camp of Last Chance Gulch and the developing city and state capital of Helena, Montana. The evolution of the structure is traced with photographs of the late 19th Century. Administrative objects depict varied facets of parish activity during this time. Photos of objects used in sacramental ministry reflect the simplicity and grandeur of Catholic life in a mining camp transformed to a political center. Although the objects are inanimate, some traveled around the diocese until the 21st Century. The archival documents and books from the Sacred Hearts Cathedral reveal the usual activities of a parish with a few surprising details.
